JBST Triathlete Peter Addison

This is Peter's second race season with JBST,
the first year (2002) was very productive [see here].

A late November '02 peak in the Treadmill test
shows the usual mid-winter drop in fitness that all UK-based
(and other Northern Hemisphere) athletes should be prepared for.

But this is followed by steady declines to a Run HR 5.6% lower in May.
Steady training (57hrs of running) give about 1% gain per 10hrs from December 2002.

Also the Resting Heart rate (Polar HRM) is shown below,
it that mirrors the treadmill test but drops even more (ie. 23% drop).
See the JBST Approach and Lessons below the graph.

HR for Treadmill Running (14.8 kmh) and at Rest Oct'02 - May '03

JBST SMART Approach:

1. Build winter base with HR controlled sessions with minimal anaerobic work.

2. Use resting heart rate before tests to ensure you are calm and not over-stressed.

3. Use RAMP tests regularly to check for fitness and performance.

JBST SMART Lessons:

* Resting HR can be useful as a test of fitness - but only with "active" benchmarks" as well.

* Build a big base and perform anaerobic work from about March-April onwards.

* Keep good records and a diary and you can have some great motivational tools.
